Our Purpose & History

There's No Place Like Mama's Home started over 5 years ago, when I discovered there was a need for housing for homeless or displaced LGBT youths and young adults, who were disowned by their parents for being Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transvestite and transgender.

Welcome my name is Joy. But I am better known in Wilton Manors Florida as Mama.

My story started five years ago when I started taking in LGBT youths. Most of these brilliant youths found themselves with no home to go to once they Came Out to their parents. Being involved in Theatre..... I found many young people in the position of needing a home to come home to, and I was more than happy to be the Mama that they truly needed in order to feel loved until they loved themselves.
 I would be the shoulder they needed to cry on, the one that would help them feel loved and lovable, the ears to hear their needs and their stories.
Mama's Home has taken in over 40 LGBT Youths and young adults as of February 2012.
As of Feb. 2012 Mama's Home was shut down by the bank and sold.
 I finally realized my "PURPOSE"....I had been doing it all along.
"THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE MAMA'S HOME...could help....
1.Lower the Statistics of suicide among the LGBT Community.
2.Help Youths to feel at home...for a change.
3.Ease the pain of Coming Out.
4.To learn you are lovable until you love yourself.
5.To help counsel youths and their families back together..           
For all those that just need a support system or a new start...these kids shouldn't have to go to a halfway house because they have no other place to go or couch surf or find themselves in places they would rather not be.        My 40 kids have many very interesting stories, the one thing they agree on is that to them..."There's No Place Like Mama's Home". We have had every race and sexual orientation in Mama's Home as well as HIV positive.
